How to Stay Organized During Your House Hunt

Looking for a new home can be a lot of things; fun, challenging, and even stressful. The best way to tackle the house hunting process is to stay organized and focused while you search for the perfect new space for you and your family. We know how difficult this process can be, after all, you’re turning your whole world upside down! To make this experience as easy as possible for you, here are our top tips for staying organized during your search for the perfect home.

    Write it Out!

Studies have shown that you are more likely to stick with and accomplish tasks and goals if you write them out. That’s right, grab an old-fashioned pencil and paper and write down all of your requirements for your new home. How many bedrooms will you need? How many bathrooms? Is a big backyard a priority for you? Is there enough parking for all of your family members? By writing down your needs, you are less likely to forget and skip over things.

    Take a Pic!

Although your memory is probably great, your brain is going to be overloaded during the housing process. Don’t just rely on what you think space looked like, whip out that camera phone and take lots of pictures! Don’t be afraid to get shots of each room at different angles so that you can thoroughly remember the dimensions and layout of each house. Rosy retrospect can make a home seem better in your mind than it really was, so make sure you are remembering everything accurately by documenting every home you see.

    Make a Spreadsheet

The more properties you look at, the more prospects you are going to have to compare. Make an excel chart with different aspects of each home; the number of bedrooms, type of flooring, etc. and fill in the chart for each place you visit. This will help you to clearly see how your potential new places stack up against each other. Having this spreadsheet clearly laid out will allow you to make the most logical and thought out decision about your space.

    Communicate Your Needs

While many real estate agents are great, they are not mind readers! That’s why it is important to keep an open line of communication with your agent. Have your requirements changed? Do you prefer the feel of certain neighborhoods over others? Knowing what you are looking for and communicating them to your agent successfully is a sure recipe for staying on task and finding your dream home.

Buying a home can seem scary, but the more organized you are the easier the process will be! By following these tips, you are sure to find the perfect space in no time at all. And as always, call us, your experts at Crager Tobin Real Estate, for any of your house hunting needs.
