Columbus was officially chartered as a city on March 3, 1834, nearly 30 years after Ohio received the recognition of statehood. The first mayor, John Brooks, was elected in April of that year, and after 18 years of construction, the Ohio Statehouse opened on January 7, 1857.

In 2010, Ohio State, commonly known as OSU, was ranked 18th among the nation’s best public universities in U.S. News & World Reports. The university is best known for it’s athletic programs, more specifically the football team. Coach Urban Meyer, who began coaching at OSU last season, is currently undefeated as the coach with a record of 14-0.
